GALEN KAM, MD
Dr. Kam is a Board Certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in shoulder, elbow, and upper extremity surgery. As opposed to being Board Certified in only general orthopaedics, he elected for a specialty-specific Board Examination, and passed the required exam as an Upper Extremity specialist.
Dr. Kam was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and did all of his early education there. He then went on to college at Washington University in St. Louis, MO where he obtained a BA in Biology, and minors in Psychology and Literature. He graduated from Washington University with Magna Cum Laude honors.
He then spent a year working in a cardiology research lab at Washington University School of Medicine, where he developed a strong interest in medicine and surgery. To further his education, he went on to do a Masters in Physiology program at The Chicago Medical School.
From there, he went on to Creighton University in Omaha, NE for medical school where he graduated in the top 5% of his class, and was honored by being accepted in to Alpha Omega Alpha which is a nationally recognized medical honor society.
His experiences in medical school led him to a strong interest in orthopaedic surgery. He was then accepted into the orthopaedic residency program at the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California, where he completed 5 years of orthopaedic surgery training. This residency program is recognized as one of the busiest training programs in the country, and known for its high volume trauma center.
After completing residency, he then was accepted into one of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons fellowships for advanced Upper Extremity training. His fellowship was at the San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow, and Hand Clinic, under the guidance of Tom Norris, MD who is nationally and internationally recognized for his contributions to shoulder reconstructive surgery. The fellowship included exposure to reconstructive procedures from the shoulder down to the hand. While his fellowship was weighted to shoulder and elbow procedures, about 30% of his time was spent in wrist and hand surgery where he was trained in common hand surgery procedures.
After completing his fellowship training, he then moved back to Hawaii, where he was in private practice for 5 years and served as one of only two fellowship trained shoulder and elbow surgeons in the state. He was the group’s primary upper extremity surgeon, taking care of most of the shoulder and elbow surgeries. He shared the hand surgery responsibilities with one of the group’s other surgeons. His practice included about 30% general orthopaedics, which included general fracture or injury care of any body part.
Dr. Kam moved to Las Vegas in 2012 and has been in private practice ever since. He serves his community as one of only a few shoulder and elbow surgeons in the Las Vegas area and surrounding region. He is involved in the education of orthopaedic surgery residents, teaching them to be competent and caring surgeons. Dr. Kam is involved in furthering the field of shoulder and elbow surgery by participating in research activities, as well as serving as a physician consultant to various orthopaedic implant companies. Dr. Kam is Nevada's only member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and general fitness activities.
