Richard Michelin, DO Fellowship Trained orthopaedic surgeon

Shoulder & Elbow Specialist

From his blue-collar roots in Las Vegas – a dad with 30 years at The Mirage as a Casino Supervisor, and his mom a teacher at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts – Dr. Richard M. Michelin is proud to be native born in Las Vegas. This is where he wanted to return as an experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon. And by a unique set of circumstances, he is thrilled to have returned and be working with Crovetti Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine.

Dr. Michelin’s practice not only assists those with general orthopaedic ailments, but also patients who require extraordinary expertise when it comes to shoulders and elbows, including, arthroscopy, reconstruction, preservation, joint replacement, sports medicine, fractures, and revision surgery.

Following his graduation from Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, Dr. Michelin played collegiate baseball and earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at California Lutheran University. He then embarked on his medical journey, successfully obtaining his medical degree from Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. His orthopaedic surgery residency took place at Riverside University Health System – a respected Level 1 Trauma Center and County Facility in California. During this time, he served as a team physician for multiple sports at the University of California Riverside and Cal Baptist University.

Further enriching his expertise, Dr. Michelin completed a Fellowship in Adult Shoulder and Elbow Reconstruction at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Institute in Los Angeles. During this time he also helped provide team coverage for the Los Angeles Angels. He will now be one of only three orthopedic surgeons in town who has completed an American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons accredited fellowship. As shoulder arthroplasty continues to be one of the fastest growing orthopedic procedures in the country, Dr. Michelin hopes to bring a new element of highly subspecialized care to the Las Vegas Valley.

Guided by his mentor, Dr. John Itamura, during fellowship Dr. Michelin acquired a unique perspective from treating many complex shoulder and elbow conditions that he has adopted into his own practice, approaching each patient as if they have lost their trust in medicine from prior experiences. He knows that patients seeking help to resolve pain can struggle both physically and emotionally when turned away by other doctors without finding a resolution. That is why he is firm in his professional commitment that he is not going to be the doctor who fails them.

With that compassion firmly entrenched, it’s not surprising that Dr. Michelin has also shown a natural ability for leadership, demonstrated by his deep commitment to all undertakings. Whether it’s medicine, research, academics, athletics, or giving back to his community, it’s clear that he is ‘all in,’ all the time.

It’s no wonder then that his commitment to patient care and innovation is driven by that dedication. His work has been featured in leading medical publications, and he continues to be an active participant and presenter at medical conferences across the nation, sharing insights and advancements.

As an active member of esteemed medical organizations, including the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), Dr. Michelin’s influence is well established. He was honored as the 2021 Osteopathic Orthopedic Surgery Resident of the Year by the American Osteopathic Foundation and with the 2022 Young Investigator Award for medical research by the Western Orthopaedic Association. Additionally, he actively engages in mentorship programs, guiding aspiring alumni in their professional journeys.

On his own time, Dr. Michelin enjoys hobbies such as pickleball, working out, cycling, baseball, and playing the drums. His favorite time though, is spent with his wife, Holly (a mom, Marketing Director, and property manager) and their three-year-old son, Logan. Oh, and enjoying the anticipation of their small family growing by one more toward the end of the year.
